EU Maritime Forces Free Sailors After Somalia Pirate Attack on Vessel

Naval Operation
The Hellas Aphrodite was captured by pirates on Thursday

EU maritime units have successfully rescued two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged oil tanker that was targeted by pirates off the coast of Somalia.

The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying fuel from India to South African destinations, was seized on the recent incident when armed pirates opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before taking control of the ship.

The crew secured themselves inside a fortified citadel while the pirates assumed command of the marine transport.

Successful Rescue Operation

A naval vessel, functioning under the EU's anti-piracy mission, arrived at the tanker on Friday afternoon. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.

"The crew is secure and no injuries have been reported. Throughout the incident, they remained in the citadel in direct contact with the operation," officials announced, noting that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the attackers to abandon the ship before the naval unit reached the location.

Continuing Danger

Officials added that the threat risk in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the vicinity.

The rescue operation utilized a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Just hours earlier, a different vessel in the same area was approached by a fast boat but managed to evade it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks that have created concern about a renewal of piracy in the area.

Such activity had declined when global maritime security and protective protocols were implemented after reaching their highest point more than a ten years past.

Nevertheless, assaults by militant groups on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have led vessels to be diverted through East Africa's Indian Ocean - creating new opportunities for Somali gangs.

Statistical Overview

  • Seven reported incidents of maritime crime occurred off the coast of the Somali region in the previous year
  • Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
  • A single case of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Maritime security experts continue to monitor the developments as shipping companies travel through these potentially hazardous shipping lanes.
