Former President Trump Welcomed by Japan's Emperor Naruhito Before Meeting New Prime Minister
Ex-President Donald Trump received a royal welcome on Monday in Japan, the latest leg of a five-day Asia trip which he aspires to conclude with an arrangement on a trade conflict ceasefire with Chinese president Xi Jinping.
Official Meetings
Trump, making his lengthiest overseas trip since beginning his term in the start of the year, announced deals with four Southeast Asian countries during the first stop in the Malaysian nation and is projected to meet Xi in the Korean peninsula on later this week.
Trump shook hands with representatives on the airport runway and gave a few fist pumps, before his aircraft transported him for a picturesque evening excursion of the metropolitan city. His motorcade was later seen accessing the emperor's residence, where he met Japanese emperor Naruhito.
Economic Agreements
Donald Trump has secured a $550-billion investment pledge from Tokyo in exchange for relief from strict customs taxes.
Japan's newly elected prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, is hoping to further impress Trump with assurances to acquire US utility vehicles, agricultural products and natural gas, and reveal an arrangement on maritime construction.
Takaichi, who assumed the role of Japan's initial woman prime minister in the past seven days, told Trump that reinforcing their countries' alliance was her "top priority" in a telephone call on Saturday.
Additional Developments
- The US and China have reached consensus a structure for a commercial agreement mere days before Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping are due to meet. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said the agreement, created on the sidelines of the ASEAN conference in the Malaysian nation on Sunday, would remove the risk of the application of 100% tariffs on goods from China starting on the first of November.
- Trump has managed the execution of a truce deal between the Thai nation and the Cambodian country on the opening day of an Asia tour. The American leader arrived in the Malaysian nation on the weekend before the international meeting in the main city, Malaysia's capital.
- The council of American-Islamic relations has charged the Trump administration of a "blatant affront to freedom of expression" after national border officials apprehended UK reporter, the journalist, on Sunday.
Donald Trump said he was looking forward to encountering Japan's leader, a close ally of his late friend and golf companion, ex-premier the late prime minister, stating: "I think she'll become great."
Public Remarks
Furthermore, Trump stated he would eliminate seeking the vice-presidency in the 2028 US election, an approach some of his supporters have suggested to enable the conservative head to serve an extra period in the White House.
"It would be permissible to pursue that path," Trump said, in an conversation with journalists within Air Force One.
Yet he stated: "That's not an option. I think it's excessively tricky. Yeah, I would rule that out because it's excessively tricky. In my opinion the people would disapprove of that. It's too cute. It's not - it would not constitute appropriate."
